Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger
The first of the MUSIQ series of games

The first of the Adventus MUSIQ series of games, Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger pits one of the world's top musical groups against another in a struggle for global music supremacy, and the arena is a dynamic strategy game. Challenge the reigning musical minds to a contest you'll never forget.

Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger In The Classroom:
Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger removes many barriers to learning music theory while improving ear recognition in a subtle way. Connections between intervals, chords, scales and semitone building blocks are also assimilated while playing the game, because the nature of each move parallels musical relationships.

Most students have good ears, but their knowledge of music structures is often under-developed, and therefore cannot be used to create or reproduce music effectively. While enjoying the strategies of Opus 1, players become comfortable with musical labels, and are constantly associating them with corresponding sounds, allowing the recognition and construction of interval, chord, and scale motifs to become effortless while they play.

At the advanced level, players must negotiate their way through the decoding of a mystery selection of music from several distinct genres. The game ends when a player has completed the decoding of this secret notation.

Certain to provide entertainment and musical development in your music program, or at home.

What does MusIQ stand for? MusIQ stands for the Musical Intelligence series brought to you by Adventus Inc. MusIQ is a series of interactive musical games designed to increase your knowledge and skills while you play a game.

What is ‘Challenger’? ‘Challenger’ is the first title in the MusIQ series. It takes a difficult area of music theory, one that defies most methods of instruction, and makes it easier to learn, permanently. The student will gain knowledge and familiarity with all intervals and all musical devices, including all chords and tetrachords, pentatonic, major, minor and whole note scales, including modes. Students will learn to associate the symbol of the interval with the appropriate pitch, and will also learn the number of semitones in each interval distance.

Who is Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger meant for? This game was developed for university level music students to provide a much better base for subsequent harmony, theory and composition courses. Students are traditionally weak in this area, but if Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger is used regularly, these building blocks are absorbed easily. Technically, this strategy game is meant for anyone who wants to know the above elements very well. Practically speaking, students in a classroom setting should be at least 10 years of age. Prior knowledge of intervals, chords, and scales is not required.

Why Play ‘Music: Challenger’? This game is fun, challenging, and effective. Students get something out of each game, and it is a captivating classroom activity. Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger has enough depth to challenge the university level music professor playing at the advanced setting, and the flexibility to allow a junior high student to begin playing on the beginner level.

How do I make the best use of Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger?

Try to have a couple games a week, proceeding with the recommendations in the accompanying course manual. It will take students different lengths of time to become expert players, depending on their musical background, and their ability to develop a logical strategy.

Point beginner musicians to the theory primer, which also contains the rules of the game. When the basics are understood, show students example games, with some techniques for improving their game. Some standard demo games are available in the main menu. Then set students up to have an in-class tournament. Take your whole class, or an interested portion, and play a class from a different school or college.

Who created this game? Ken Davidson, a professor of music at Acadia University, developed this strategy game for his 1st and 2nd year university music students. It was first published as a board game in 1980. Unfortunately, it took too long to pick up the elements of the game, and required too much teacher time. It was concluded that the interactivity, and the ability of the computer to give hints to beginners at appropriate times made this game more appropriate as software.

What about Tournaments? The software version of Adventus Musiq Opus 1 Challenger  was created with the intention of being played over the Internet between two parties. This leaves an interesting opportunity to have on-line ladder-type tournaments. Adventus will assist in the facilitation of inter-school, or inter-state tournaments. This is a great way to meet people from other music programs across North America.
