Steinberg, makers of Cubase, have just released their new UR22 USB audio interface. The UR22 is not just any audio interface: it features two onboard Yamaha D-PRE microphone preamplifiers, resolution up to 24-bit/192kHz, MIDI connectivity and latency free hardware monitoring. At its modest price, features of this caliber have previously been unavailable.
The UR22’s front panel features two Neutrik XLR/TRS combo jacks, each with a rotary gain knob and a peak indicator light, and a global 48V phantom power indicator. The second input also has a Hi-Z switch, making it ideal for directly plugging in an electric bass or guitar. The headphone monitoring section features a level control and a unique Mix knob, which controls the balance between your inputs and playback from the DAW for latency free monitoring. An overall output level knob is also provided.
The back panel houses a stereo pair of 1/4” TRS line-level outputs as well as MIDI In and Out ports. The USB 2.0 connection and global Phantom power switch are also provided.
The UR22 also includes a free download of Cubase AI software, a basic version of Steinberg’s flagship DAW for composing, recording, editing and mixing.
Pure sound wherever inspiration strikes. The UR22 is a tourtested USB audio and MIDI interface that highlights two of Yamaha’s D-PRE microphone preamps, cutting-edge 24- bit/192kHz converters and an all-metal housing that is made to last. Powered entirely via USB, the compact 2-in/2-out device features a high-impedance input for connecting directly to electric or bass guitars plus zero-latency hardware monitoring for convenient recording. A separate headphones jack with dedicated volume control, switchable +48V phantom power and
the included AI version of Cubase make this interface the number one choice for part-time producers, mobile musicians and everyone in between.
The Steinberg UR22 is a 2 in and 2 out USB 2.0 audio interface featuring two great-sounding D-PRE microphone preamps to capture all the subtleties and expressiveness of any audio source. With its ultra rugged full-metal housing, this USBpowered interface allows you to record any source wherever you are. Even with its compact size, the interface provides you with full functionality at the highest quality, matching that of higher-class interfaces.
The preamp is where sound creation begins in recording, and ultimately determines the quality of your mix. D-PRE uses an inverted Darlington circuit where a total of four transistors per unit are used instead of the typical two. As a result, very low distortion can be maintained regardless of the signal level. The sonic integrity is incomparable in this class of audio interfaces and sets the UR22 apart.
All components on the UR22 are carefully selected and implemented for full resolution of high-end audio of up to 24- bit/192 kHz. A higher sampling frequency means more samples of the audio source, resulting in better reproduction of the original sound, contributing to the naturalness of audio image

Your mobile studio
Together with the included Cubase DAW running on your PC or Mac computer, the UR22 audio and MIDI interface is a fullfledged mobile recording studio defined through total mobility, ultra-solid build and superb sound quality.
The microphone preamp is arguably one of the key factors in recording. A studio-grade preamp will work wonders on your entire mix — and that’s why the UR22 is equipped with two stellar-sounding D-PREs. These premium-quality preamps are the culmination of years of development by the experts at Yamaha. The result is a truly transparent and beautifully detailed sound that is unrivaled in this class. Whether you're looking to record acoustic instruments, vocals, an electric guitar or ambient textures, with the UR22 you can easily capture any audio source — anywhere.
And the good news doesn’t stop here. Just as important as the preamps are, of course, the converters. The UR22 includes first-rate A/D and D/A converters that provide supreme sonic fidelity. And where others come to a halt the UR22 begins to shine. With a maximum sampling rate of 192 kHz and a resolution of 24 bits, you are more than ready to deliver futureproof music productions — quality is what the UR22 is all about.
… wherever you are
The UR22 is addicted to touring. This mobile miracle is destined to be your closest companion when recording on the go or performing live on stage. It’s small enough to be rushed from gig to gig and rugged enough to withstand all the rigors of the road. Built to the most exacting standards by Yamaha’s experienced engineers, the UR22’s full metal chassis is reassuringly solid. You're free to hit it with your drumstick, throw it into the tour bus or simply open a beer with it — thanks to its impressive manufacturing quality the tour-tested UR22 is
always ready to roll.
And regardless of its size, the UR22 exhibits all the core features of its bigger brothers, the UR824 and the UR28M, allowing you to realize rock-solid recordings without restrictions.
Simply connect it via USB to your computer and start making music without any additional power supply — and always in class-leading sound quality. Being a great choice for any gigging guitarist, the UR22 also features a Hi-Z on input 2 to connect directly to electric and bass guitars.
To sum it up, the UR22 is the right choice, if you are looking for exceptional quality in a compact design. Take it to the hottest shows or on the longest tours and dial up pro-grade sound no matter where you are — mobility is what the UR22 is all about.
Great things come in small packages
The difference is in the details. The UR22 features all the connections needed for pro-sounding recordings. Its two Neutrik analog XLR/TRS combo inputs with Peak LEDs and switchable +48V phantom power enable you to connect even the most valuable condenser microphones, whereas the Hi-Z switch on input 2 allows for direct recording of electric guitar or bass without the need to use an additional DI box.
Best of all, the UR22 features latency-free hardware monitoring — what you play is what you immediately hear and nothing will interrupt your musical enthusiasm. The intuitive Mix knob allows you to seamlessly blend between the direct signal of your instrument and the output signal of your host application. And thanks to the independent headphones and main output controls you can control the monitor and phones level individually.
If you are into electronic music, you will be happy to hear that the UR22 is equipped with a MIDI input and output. This way you can easily connect your favorite keyboard or any other MIDI-compatible control device, such as pad controllers, footswitches and sound modules. Two TRS outputs, ultra-stable driver software and an industry-standard USB 2.0 connection complement the feature set of this feature-packed yet highly affordable device. A true team player The UR22 is compatible with all major audio editing, mastering and music production software supporting the ASIO, Core Audio or WDM standard. The driver installation is as straightforward as it can be. And once you are done, the UR22 seamlessly integrates into your favorite DAW, making the interface your ready-to-go solution for instant recordings.
Plus, the UR22 comes bundled with Cubase AI, a lean version of Steinberg’s advanced music production system. Based on the same core technologies as Steinberg’s highly acclaimed Cubase DAW, the AI version offers a comprehensive feature set for composing, recording, editing and mixing. Run it together with the UR22 audio interface and you get a one-stop solution for recording music in studio quality.
Cubase users will benefit from additional features, such as auto-setup functionality, which enables the complete I/O setup to be handled directly from within Cubase. Once your UR22 interface has been installed, Cubase detects the device and automatically embeds it into Cubase's production environment — it couldn't be easier.
